Trans-sternal percutaneous computed tomography (CT) guided biopsy for mediastinal mass is a difficult but feasible procedure. In the literature there have only been reports from four medical centers in western countries. Herein we report a case of 57-year-old man with a 38mm-sized mass in anterior mediastinum. Since the tumor access was blocked by both sternum and aortic arch branches, trans-sternal percutaneous CT-guided biopsy was the only possible way for tissue proof. The planning, imaging, and technique considerations of this procedure are discussed. With this particular case, we confirmed the feasibility of trans-sternal percutaneous CT-guided core biopsy in the Taiwanese population. Trans-sternal percutaneous CT-guided biopsy is a difficult but feasible way to sample the tissue of a mediastinal lesion. Herein we reported a case of 57-year-old man who had an anterior mediastinal mass. By using trans-sternal percutaneous CT-guided biopsy, we successfully obtained the tissue sample of the mass and the patient tolerated biopsy well.

Computed tomography-guided percutaneous core needle biopsy for diagnosis of mediastinal mass lesions: Experience with 110 cases in two university hospitals in Isfahan, Iran
BACKGROUND Computed tomography-guided percutaneous core needle biopsy (PCNB) is a diagnostic technique for initial assessment of mediastinal mass lesions. This study was conducted to evaluate its diagnostic yield and its complication rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed the records of CT-guided PCNB in 110 patients with mediastinal mass lesions performed in Kashani and Alzahra Hospitals, I...
متن کاملPercutaneous Transthoracic Lung Biopsy: Comparison Between C-Arm Cone-Beam CT and Conventional CT Guidance
BACKGROUND C-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a comparatively novel modality for guiding percutaneous transthoracic lung biopsies (PTLBs), and despite its potential advantages over conventional computed tomography (CCT), a head-to-head comparison of the two techniques has yet to be reported in the literature. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic value and safety of CBCT-guided ...
متن کاملMediastinal epidermoid cyst in an old man with recurrent pneumonia: A case report
Mediastinal epidermoid cyst is a rare condition that is considered as a congenital disorder. Various manifestations from asymptomatic cases to serious symptoms may be found in these patients. However, some cases may be diagnosed incidentally. Here, we report an old man with recurrent pneumonia who demonstrated symptoms of respiratory distress and chest pain. The high resolution computed tomogra...
متن کاملCore needle biopsy is effective in the initial diagnosis of mediastinal lymphoma.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE With the development and refinement of guidance modalities for percutaneous biopsies, many investigators have reported studies supporting the role of guided core needle biopsy in the diagnosis of mediastinal lymphoma. The aims of this report are to evaluate the efficacy of findings at core needle biopsy of mediastinal masses on patient care and define the key determinan...

Reprint requests to: Dr. I-Chen Tsai Department of Radiology, Taichung Veterans General Hospital. No. 160, Sec. 3, Taichung Harbor Road, Taichung 407, Taiwan, R.O.C. Many studies have shown that multi-detector row CT (MDCT) can accurately evaluate coronary artery bypass grafts. When compared with cardiac catheterization, the diagnostic accuracy of MDCT for coronary artery bypass graft is promis...
